The purpose of the Institute is to expand understanding of the relationship between societal processes and land use and changes in the ecosystems of subarctic environments, as well as to develop theories, techniques and methods which can be applied in cultural landscape studies. Research results contribute to the development of analytical instruments used to further the development of environmental strategy and find a broad range of applications within government, education and business and industry. Knowledge about the development of land use by humans is necessary to ensure that commerce, nature preservation and historic preservation can be conducted in a thoughtful and quality-focused manner. ![]()
