labbet_1.jpg The Institute for Subarctic Landscape Research is an independent institute within
the framework of the Silver Museum’s organisation and is not affiliated
with any university or college.

Research Focus
The Institute conducts research with a focus on the relationship between land use by humans and changes in the ecosystems of subarctic environments. Operations are in the form interdisciplinary collaboration, primarily with archaeologists and ecologists.

Research also encompasses other scientific disciplines and the researchers associated with the Institute are all leading experts in their fields, with extensive experience of publishing academic works internationally. The Institute is based in Arjeplog and is active in international research.

The purpose of the Institute is to expand understanding of the relationship between societal processes and land use and changes in the ecosystems of subarctic environments, as well as to develop theories, techniques and methods which can be applied in cultural landscape studies.

Research results contribute to the development of analytical instruments used to further the development of environmental strategy and find a broad range of applications within government, education and business and industry.

Knowledge about the development of land use by humans is necessary to ensure that commerce, nature preservation and historic preservation can be conducted in a thoughtful and quality-focused manner.logo_utan_text_kopia.jpg

Subarctic Cultural Landscapes
Subarctic cultural landscapes stretch over a wide geographical area and include the northern boreal coniferous region and the arctic and alpine regions which border them. The area encompasses the coniferous forests of Canada, Alaska and Eurasia, mountainous and tundra regions – or, simply put, the region closest to the Arctic Circle.
